Maria R. Schimer, J.D., is the General Counsel for the Northeast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED) and the Ohio Assistant Attorney General who represents the University. She is a licensed attorney in the State of Ohio and is admitted to practice before the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Ohio and the U.S. Supreme Court. Attorney Schimer is the University’s Chief Technology Transfer Officer and as such works in close partnership with NEOMED’s Office of Research and Sponsored Programs. She serves as the Kent State University/NEOUCOM representative to the Pathogen System’s Incorporated (d/b/a Crystal Diagnostics) Board of Directors and currently serves as the Chair of the Board of Directors.

She is an Associate Professor of Family and Community Medicine, a NEOMED Master Teacher and a member of the Graduate Faculty at NEOMED, a Fellow of the Institute for Life Span Development and Gerontology at The University of Akron. She is also a Registered Professional Nurse. She graduated with honors from The University of Akron, School of Law; The University of Michigan, School of Public Health, with a Masters in Public Health Planning and Administration, and Gerontology; and from the State University of New York at Binghamton with undergraduate degrees in Nursing and Sociology. Her academic interests include legal issues in the practice of medicine and public health, the legal rights of competent and incompetent persons, guardianship and adult protective services law, elder abuse and neglect, conflict resolution, and alternative dispute resolution. As a NEOMED Master Teacher she is committed to teaching excellence, especially in teaching learners in small groups.
