Michelle Edison, MPH, MS (Class 2014, YSU)--Michelle is the Mahoning County Pathways HUB Coordinator at the Mahoning County District Board of Health. The mission of the HUB is to reduce infant mortality in Youngstown and Mahoning County by improving birth outcomes. Through the HUB, Michelle collaborates with local agencies, programs, and services to connect women to a healthy pregnancy by addressing barriers associated with the social determinants of health. Previously, Michelle was the Wellness Program Coordinator for the YMCA of Youngstown and was instrumental in bringing national, evidence-based prevention programs to the Y. She also spend several years as an adjunct professor and student advisor in the Human Performance and Exercise Science Department at Youngstown State University. Her work in both areas inspired her to purse a second graduate degree in public health. Currently, Michelle lives in Mahoning County with her husband and three children. Slides (PDF)
Tom Quade, MA, MPH (faculty, CEOMPH)--Tom Quade is currently health commissioner for Marion County, Ohio. Prior to this position, he served as the deputy health commissioner for Summit County Public Health. He is the current president-elect for the American Public Health Association. Tom received his MPH from Yale University and his CPH in 2009. He has previously worked for the World Health Organization. Mary Helen Smith, MPH, RS, CPH (Class 2004, YSU)--Mary Helen Smith is the Environmental Health director at Portage County Combined General Health District. She has worked with the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency, as well as three local health departments in Ohio. Mary Helen has also been a business owner. She belongs and to a number of professional associations and is treasurer for the Ohio Environmental Health Association. Her certifications include Certified in Public Health, Registered Sanitarian, Registered Environmental Health Specialist, Certified Pool Inspector, and Ohio Commercial Pesticide Applicator. Her leadership activities include being a site visitor for the Council on Education for Public Health, and participation in the Environmental Public Health Leadership Institute, CEOMPH Public Health Academy, and the Protocol for Assessing Community Excellence in Environmental Health (PACE EH).
Wendy (Cameron) Smith, MPH, MA (Class 1999, UA)--Wendy Smith is the Epidemiology Preparedness Director at the Georgia Department of Health (DPH). She participates in a wide variety of planning, training and exercise activities for naturally occurring or human-caused diseases and environmental events with public health impacts. She has been Georgia's BioWatch/Health Security Advisory Committee Chairperson since March 2012. Wendy manages DPH's Syndromic Surveillance Program, providing technical assistance and support to local, state and federal public health jurisdictions as well as data providers. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in cultural anthropology from The University of Akron, and was interested in medical anthropology. Later, she earned her MPH at The University of Akron in the Consortium of Eastern Ohio Master of Public Health program. Her focus was on health disparities in underserved populations and access to care issues. She has continued pursuing that theme, earning her Master of Arts in Security Studies (Homeland Security and Defense) from the Center for Homeland Defense and Security at the Naval Postgraduate School, with a thesis focus on public health planning for vulnerable populations during an influenza pandemic. Aaron Bohannon, MPH, CHES (Class 2001, KSU)--Aaron Bohannon is a qualified public health professional with a focus on cancer and tobacco control and an emphasis on capacity building and strategic development. His career has spanned the Atlantic, having worked with several organizations including Planned Parenthood, American Cancer Society, UK National Centre for Smoking Cessation and Training, UK Department of Health (West Midlands), and the Leicestershire County Council (current). Mr. Bohannon's mission in life is to educate, empower, and encourage people to live better, stronger, healthier lives. He lives with his wife Nicole and two amazing children in Leicestershire, England.
LCDR Neelam D. Ghiya (Class 2002, YSU)--Health Services Officer (HSO) is stationed at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Headquarters in Atlanta, GA. She is working out of the Office of the Associate Director for Science (OADS) as a Health Scientist. LCDR Ghiya is a Training Unit Lead and Emergency Coordinator (EC) for the Office of the Director (OD). Neelam was the CDC Director’s emergency response special assistant apart of the CDC Chief of Staff (Cos) office. She also coordinates the CDC Director’s Public Health Grand Rounds for which she received a USPHS Citation Award. LCDR Ghiya has participated in Hurricane, Tornado and Pan Flu exercises as well as Unaccompanied Children (UC), H1N1, H7N9, MERS COV, Ebola, and Polio Eradication Responses via the CDC Emergency Operations Center (EOC) earning her Unit Citation and Outstanding Unit Citation Awards.
