Biography

Thomas Quade is the Deputy Health Commissioner at Summit County Public Health, the county health district for Summit County, Ohio. Mr. Quade also currently serves as Vice Chair of the Executive Board of the American Public Health Association (APHA) and had previously served in a variety of governance and advisory capacities within APHA. Between 2000 and 2010, he served in progressively responsible roles in local governmental public health practice as the Epidemiologist, Health Promotion Division Director, Community Health Assessment and Health Promotion Division Director, Deputy Health Director, and then Interim Director of Health for the Akron Health Department, Akron, Ohio. He also currently serves as community faculty for the Northeastern Ohio Medical College Master or Public Health program.

Mr. Quade earned his MPH from Yale University in 1999 and his CPH credential in 2008 as part of the inaugural class. His previous public health work included a position with the World Health Organization in Rome, Italy in 1999. Mr. Quade served in the United State Peace Corps in the Kingdom of Nepal prior to pursuing his degree in public health. Mr. Quade earned an MA in Counselor Education in 1990 from the University of Cincinnati and worked from 1990-1995 in a family counseling role with families who had one or more members living with developmental disabilities.

Mr. Quade chaired the National Association for County and City Health Officials (NACCHO) workgroup on Disabilities and Health for several years and is currently participating in a project to develop public health workforce competencies related to persons living with disabilities. Nationally, in addition to the APHA Executive Board, he serves on the National Board of Public Health Examiners and the Foundation to Advance Public Health through Certification. Locally, he currently serves as the Vice President of the Board of Developmental Disabilities for Summit County, Ohio.

Mr. Quade has been an active member of APHA since his graduate studies, initially as a student member in 1998 and in 2000 as a regular member. He has been a member of the Epidemiology, Disabilities, and Health Administration Sections. In 2000 he joined his state affiliate in Ohio where he took on leadership roles including initiating an Epidemiology SPIG that he chaired, at-large affiliate Governing Council seat, Affiliate Representative to APHA Governing Council, and the three year President ladder. He has served on the APHA Action Board, Committee on Affiliates, Joint Dues Committee, and chaired both the Affiliate Capacity Building Initiative (ACBI) Advisory Committee and the Communication Committee of the Action Board. One of his priorities continues to be the facilitation of communication and articulation of the relationship between APHA’s section membership and APHA’s affiliate membership, believing that this would produce a stronger advocacy mechanism for the national association and generate a more recognizable relevance to the broader local public health workforce across the country.
